Martin Dimitrov is a Bulgarian journalist and media freedom activist based in Sofia. He has contributed to various international outlets, including The Guardian, Los Angelis Times and the Financial Times, as well as to the leading Bulgarian and economic weekly newspaper Capital. In addition, he edits its English-language quarterly edition, Kapital Quarterly and consults the Embassy of Canada to Romania, Bulgaria and Moldova on Bulgarian affairs. Previously, he worked as a Sofia correspondent for the Balkan Investigative Reporting Network, BIRN and its website Balkan Insight. He is also a member of the Association of European Journalists (AEJ) – Bulgaria, a media freedom watchdog that deals with issues regarding media pluralism, rights of journalists and media education. Under the cap of AEJ – Bulgaria, Martin has co-founded and currently edits a bilingual website for school students-made journalism, sCOOL Media, carries out media literacy presentations around Bulgaria and facilitates the work of young reporters. He has graduated “Baba Tonka” School of Mathematics in his hometown of Ruse in 2010, gained a Politics degree at the University of Glasgow, UK in 2014 and attended a year-long study abroad program at the University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong SAR. His interests include political philosophy, public policy, media freedom and literacy, problems of democratic transition and civic engagement.
