Mehmet Yegin is a Visiting Fellow at the Americas Research Division at Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik (SWP) in Berlin. He works on American politics and Turkish Foreign Policy. He studied on American Politics in his MA studies at the University of Cincinnati in Ohio, USA. He obtained his Ph.D. from Political Science Department of Bilkent University with a thesis title of “Why Turkey Join or Avoid Joining U.S.-led Military Coalitions?” Engaged in research at Ankara based think tank USAK (International Strategic Research Organization) since 2008, Yegin served as the Director of the organization’s Center for American Studies from 2012 to 2016.
His fields of interests are Turkish Foreign Policy, Turkey-U.S. Relations, American Politics, Alliances, NATO, US-led Military Coalitions, Coalition Burden Sharing, and Kurdish Issue.
In terms of publications, he co-edited four volumes of Interviews on Turkish Foreign Policy Series at USAK Publications. He also published reports on U.S. Elections, Turkey-U.S. Relations, and Afghanistan. He co-authored analyses for the German Marshall Fund on the issues of Turkish politics and Turkey’s relations with its neighbors and Turkey’s coalition policy on ISIS. He also wrote comments at Turkish newspapers and magazines such as Radikal Daily and Hurriyet Daily News; Analist Magazine and Eurasia Critic.
He also frequently appears at both Turkish and international media on his expertise. He made comments at AFP, Washington Post, ABC News, Radio Free Europe/ Radio Liberty, Voice of Russia, Deutsche Welle, BBC, Al Jazeera English, Al Jazeera Arabic, NTV, Haberturk, CNN-Turk, TRT and other Turkish Broadcasting Channels.
