He has been the Board Director for Japan at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development since July 2018. Before joining the EBRD he was Director for Administration, Management, and Coordination, Asian Development Bank Institute from June 2015. Before joining ADBI, he was International Consultant Economist at the IMF – Singapore Regional Training Institute from 2011 to 2015, where he taught macroeconomic policy to government officials in Asia. He was a professor of international finance and public policy at the Graduate School of Public Policy, University of Tokyo, from 2008 to 2011. He has extensive experience in the design and implementation of public policy, having worked as a senior official at the Japanese Ministry of Finance (Director of Economic Policy Research Office), the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development in Paris (First Secretary of Japan’s Permanent Delegation), and IMF (Advisor, Asia and Pacific Department). In July 2010, he coauthored the Japanese book The Analysis of the World Economy from the Perspective of Currencies: Dollar, Euro, RMB, and Yen. A sequel, The Economics of G20: International Policy Coordination and the Growth Strategy for Japan, was published in January 2012.
